Ilona Sulikova

Ceramics

After completing an exciting course in studio ceramics, Ilona joyfully set up her workshop in York!

She then embarked on an incredible journey, dedicating several years to working with NGOs in refugee camps in Somalia and Sudan. There, she collaborated with local potters to create workshops producing large water jars, pots, and portable ceramic stoves using traditional techniques - what an inspiring experience! Upon returning to the UK, Ilona's artistic practice blossomed as she focused on crafting distinctive, round-bodied vessels influenced by her African experiences.

Making larger pieces allows her to explore intricate designs, like her captivating geometric patterns that rhythmically expand and contract around the vessel, creating a dynamic illusion of movement. Ilona loves using simple design elements that resonate across cultures, harmoniously interacting with the vessel's form. She finds joy in the peaceful process of hand-building and the thoughtful decoration that follows - each piece tells a story!
